Comic Girls ending theme song ‘Namida wa Misenai’ is upbeat but still melancholic — Best Anime Songs

Not living in a region able to watch every anime series offered by Crunchyroll, it was only recently I saw the adorable slice of life comedy series Comic Girls.

When I did, I binge watched all 12 episodes in just one day, and fell in love with not only the quirky, adorable and hilarious characters but also the Comic Girls ending theme song.

Called ‘Namida wa Misenai’ (涙はみせない I Can’t Show You My Tears), the Comic Girls ending theme song is one of those anime songs that makes you feel happy, relaxed and all warm inside while, at the same time, also feeling a little melancholic.

It is an unexpectedly good ending theme song for a slice of life comedy series that was also unexpectedly good. To the point that I think I laughed more deep belly laughs throughout Comic Girls than any other series since the equally funny Yuru Yuri.

What is Comic Girls?

It is an all-girl slice of life series about high school manga artist Moeta Kaoruko who is so bad at drawing manga and thinking up interesting stories, her editor suggests she move into a dorm with other female manga creators in the hopes she will improve.

Soon she is living with fellow creators Koizuka Koyume, Irokawa Ruki and Katsuki Tsubasa — all of whom create manga in different genres — while quickly realizing, once she sees how talented the other girls are, she is an even worse manga artist than she ever knew.

Luckily, her three housemates are happy to help her work on her art, and to encourage her in her quest to get her first anime series accepted and published.

Comic Girls is beautifully written, laugh-out-loud funny, has superb voice acting and a storyline that, while still a relaxing watch, does actually get somewhere as we see Kaoruko’s manga creation skills slowly get better.

As slice of life comedy anime series goes, Comic Girls goes down as one of my all-time faves, and its ending theme song an easy addition to Leo Sigh’s Best Anime Songs list.

Comic Girls is based on the four-panel series by Kaori Hanzawa. The anime series was adapted by Nexus (Chivalry of a Failed Knight), directed by Yoshinobu Tokumoto (Darwin’s Game) and with series composition by Natsuko Takahashi (Yuyushiki and Poco’s Udon World).

The Comic Girls ending theme song

Performed by the series’ voice actresses Hikaru Akao (Kaoruko), Kaede Hondo (Koyume), Saori Ōnishi (Ruki), and Rie Takahashi (Tsubasa), the song itself did not receive much love from Crunchyroll or any of the other anime companies that usually promote opening and ending songs when a new series is released.

A pity, as ‘Namida wa Misenai‘ really is a lovely song.
