Sonic Youth’s Cover of The Carpenters’ ‘Superstar’ is Heartbreaking — Repeat Rotation Video

If you have seen the indie movie ‘Juno‘, you will probably be familiar with Sonic Youth’s cover of the classic The Carpenters song ‘Superstar‘. My Repeat Rotation Video today, and a track that first appeared on the 1994 album If I Were A Carpenter — an homage album of Carpenters covers recorded by various popular artists at the time.

And while most of the tracks on the album had a certain poignancy to them, my favorite was American rock band Sonic Youth’s ‘Superstar‘. A track that was so unusual compared to what they normally produced, but oh so lovely.

Because on Sonic Youth’s ‘Superstar‘ we got Thurston Moore‘s barely there vocals which, accompanied by the band’s electronic distortions, are so heart-breakingly fragile and sad you can just imagine him sitting alone in his room crying over how much he loves her and misses her.

Watch Sonic Youth’s live performance of ‘Superstar‘ in the video below for your Repeat Rotation Video today.

You can pick up The Carpenters tribute album If I Were A Carpenter now.

And, even 22 years after it was first released, it is still interesting as it includes superb covers from The Cranberries with ‘(They Long To Be) Close To You’, Cracker’s ‘Rainy Days and Mondays‘ and the awesome Red Kross version of ‘Yesterday Once More‘.
