Abyss Dweller character posters drop as war-themed C-drama premieres on Tencent and Mango TV
With the Chinese historical war drama officially dropping on Tencent Video and Mango TV today, I am happy to see Abyss Dweller character posters being released for each of the lead and main supporting characters.
Especially as this one features a cast of mainly older actors, rather than the 20-somethings we often seem to get.
Yep, I am all in for any C-drama starring folks closer to my age than to the teenagers I used to teach English.
Especially when one of them is Haung Xiaoming, who was brilliant in the 2023 drama Alliance, and another is Yu Jinwei, whose performance I recently loved in The Legend of Heroes.
Abyss Dweller‘s plot sounds like the drama tells an intriguing story too, as it takes place towards the end of the Chinese Republican era and follows underground worker for the CCP, Liang Shuo, as he wakes up with a head injury and amnesia.
But after he is captured by the Japanese army, things begin to get quite mysterious and extremely interesting.
The Abyss Dweller story takes place in the winter of 1940 during the Second Sino-Japanese War (or as the Chinese call it the ‘War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression’) when, just like the Koreans around the same time, after a full-on invasion, the Chinese were treated horrendously by the Japanese.
Its no wonder the Chinese are now so adamant they will have the strongest military in the world, is it?
So, yes, expect Abyss Dweller to be a story about the inhumanities the Chinese suffered under the Japanese, and how a group of Chinese heroes are able to win out over them.

The nine character posters also came along with a message from Tencent commenting about main character Liang Shuo (played by Huang Xiaoming)
Lost among countless versions of ‘myself,’ but the true me must never lose its way.
Only inner conviction remains an unshakable beacon in the darkness.
They then remind viewers Abyss Dweller premieres today at 20:00 (Beijing Time) exclusively on Tencent Video!
Mao Weining (The Power Source) and Wang Yiwei (My Life as a Villain Character) are co-directing, with Yuan Shuai (The Truth of Scent) writing the drama.
Watch the Abyss Dweller trailer below, with Mango TV describing its fascinating plot in this way:
It tells the story of the hero Liang Shuo who “lost his memory” during a “loyalty test” mission conducted by the Japanese on the isolated island and fell into danger.
In order to regain his identity, he went into the dangerous place alone, and was exhausted by the Japanese, No. 76, and the Military Control Commission.
Later, with the help of the Communist Party, he regained his identity and position, rekindled his faith, and worked with his comrades to smash the huge conspiracy of the Japanese.
The first three episodes, by the way, are already up on the platform, which means it will be the drama I’ll be watching before bed tonight.
