Craig Charles says he’ll be leaving Coronation Street in September to return to Red Dwarf.

Here’s something I absolutely cannot wait for. Craig Charles who plays cabbie Lloyd Mullaney in Coronation Street is leaving the show to go back to his old job… wait for it… that of playing Lister in Red Dwarf.

Oh my God.

Yes, the incredibly popular sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf is returning to channel Dave, and Craig and everyone else from the original series — Chris Barrie, Robert Llewellyn, and Danny John-Jules — will be reprising their roles. Can I say, Oh my God, again?

The new series of Red Dwarf begins shooting in the autumn, with one series airing in 2016 and a second series following that in 2017.

As for Craig Charles, he has been with Coronation Street for 10 years but, according to Digital Spy, while he loves being on Corrie he says he feels it’s only right that he goes back to Red Dwarf as he owes it to his colleagues.

Of course, there’s no word yet on how Charles will be written out of the soap opera, but it’s likely not to be in a death as he says he’d love to go back to Coronation Street at a later date.

Charles’ last appearance in the world’s longest running soap opera will be in September. Filming of the new series of Red Dwarf starts around the same time.
