Danai Gurira is recognized everywhere because of Black Panther
Zimbabwean-American actress and writer Danai Gurira showed up on The Ellen DeGeneres Show today (Wednesday, April 25th). The actress is currently getting a lot of attention for her new movie Black Panther, and her role as Okoye in it, and she wanted to talk about it on the show.
So much attention, in fact, when Ellen asked her if she was recognized everywhere she goes now, the 40-year-old actress agreed she most definitely is.
“I was in Nigeria this week, in a very small town, in a small hotel, and I was just walking across the breakfast room to get a cup of tea and this man who was probably like 60 years old or so, just looked up and went “General” (General Okoye), and I was like “What?” And she laughed.
“So, yeah, that was surprising”, she went on, “But it happens a lot”.
Danai Gurira went on to talk about how she loves some of the cool things that happen to her now she is even more famous than she was when she was just known for playing Michonne in The Walking Dead. Including people like Frances McDormand, who knew who she was, and Beyonce and Jay-Z.
“That was pretty cool. Pretty cool”, she laughed. “And they were saying really awesome things, and I was star-struck. So all I kept saying was, “I am star-struck. I am star-struck”. So I hope the next time I meet them, I speak in full sentences”.
Ellen also asked her about a rumor going around about an all-female Marvel movie being in the pipeline.
“I think it is a rumor, but the cool thing is that it’s showing there’s this hunger for that type of thing,” Danai responded. “I know that the awesome Brie Larson is filming Captain Marvel as we speak, and so these things are starting to happen, and I think it’s really exciting because it shows that, of course, it’s time we start seeing the perspective of the story come exclusively from women. I mean, magic happens when women do their thang.”
