Actor Denzel Washington was on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, where he was asked how he felt about his name being used in that famous Salt N Pepa song ‘Whatta Man‘. You know, the lyrics “A body like Arnold with a Denzel face”.
And that brought the conversation round to what Denzel Washington really thought of his own name when he was a kid. He hated it.
“When I was a little kid in school, I didn’t want to be Denzel”.
When asked why Washington immediately responded with “Attendance. Because you’re sittin’ in there and they call everybody — Mikey, here, Joey, here, Billy, here, Zen..Den…Zendel. Yeah, I didn’t want to be Denzel”.
He went on to say, “I was actually called Ginger Ale once”, and then added a list of other odd names he had been called because people couldn’t pronounce Denzel.
Watch him below. And let’s face it, Denzel, Zendel, or any other name, Denzel Washington would still be cute. Come on. Look at that smile!
