You have to wonder what was going through the heads of designers Dolce & Gabbana when they decided making a negative statement about IVF was ‘the right thing to do’. As that statement has probably damaged them and their business more than anything else ever could. So much so, Sir Elton John came out after it urging a boycott of Dolce & Gabbana, and saying about the two designers, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, “Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions”.
The uproar started late last week when an interview with Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana was published in Panorama, an Italian magazine. An interview in which the design duo stated procreation “must be an act of love”. Dolce then commented, “You are born to a mother and father – or at least that’s how it should be. I call children of chemistry synthetic children. For rent. Semen chosen from a catalogue.”
Gabbana added, “The family is not a fad. In it there is a supernatural sense of belonging.”
In response, Sir Elton John, the father of two children, commented on his Instagram account,
How dare you refer to my beautiful children as “synthetic”. And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF – a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again.#BoycottDolceGabbana
Of course, Dolce & Gabbana’s outdated, bigoted, and offensive comments probably aren’t that surprising coming from these two. After all, they were also the ones who, back in 2006, had this to say about adoption by gays.
“I am opposed to the idea of a child growing up with two gay parents. A child needs a mother and a father. I could not imagine my childhood without my mother. I also believe that it is cruel to take a baby away from its mother.”
Doubly interesting as both Dolce & Gabbana are gay themselves.
All I can say is, everything these two men say, including their latest offensive comments about IVF, stinks of self-loathing. Of two men who hate themselves so much they’ll try to make those gays who don’t feel ‘lesser than’. Sad.
