As someone who watches hundreds of hours of YouTube videos every month, I’m always interested in how YouTubers make money with their videos, and how the huge YouTube channels are able to make millions of dollars a year. Yep, millions of dollars simply for making videos and uploading them to YouTube.
I’m also intrigued by why so many people still seem to have no idea how YouTubers make money with their videos and, if they do understand where the revenue comes from, don’t seem to believe someone making YouTube videos for a living can make as much money as they can.
In fact, PewDiePie, who runs one of the top YouTube channels of all time made over $5 million last year by making videos of himself playing games, or doing silly stuff, and then uploading them for other people to watch.
And he is not alone. Thousands of YouTube channels make tens of thousands of dollars every year and more, and the channel owners reap the benefits of creating videos about things they love and sharing them with the world.
So how do YouTubers make money with their videos? In two main ways.
The way most YouTubers start off making an income from the videos they create is that they are paid every time someone clicks on one of the advertisements that Google runs alongside their video.
Depending on how many views each video gets, this can be quite a lucrative way to make money.
The second way to make money is through brand deals with companies who want a popular YouTuber to place their product in a video, or to plug it to their viewers. So they provide the channel with the product, ask them to create content that features or talks about the product, and then the video producer is paid the agreed upon price.
In fact, brand deals are now becoming so big, some YouTubers are making far more money from the deals they strike than they are with the advertising on the videos themselves.
