British actor David Ryall has died. Known recently for his role as Elphias Doge in the ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows‘ films, Ryall was one of my favorite character actors for other reasons.
He played Grandad in the BBC sitcom ‘Outnumbered‘, Old Bert in ‘The Village‘, Eric in ‘Goodnight Sweetheart‘, and was an evil driving instructor on the Inspector Morse episode ‘Driven to Distraction‘, as well as appearing in many more TV and movie roles. Ryall was also a frequent cast member at the National Theatre.
In fact, he was one of those British actors you will have seen in a hundred or more things, and probably didn’t know his name. But every time he appeared on screen, you thought “Oh, it’s him. And he’s so good.”
David Ryall died on Christmas Day at the age of 79. At this point, his family has not released any cause of death or any other information.
All I can say is what a very sad loss, and what a lovely man.
