Great news for fans of the Terra Formars manga as, according to Viz Media, the sci-fi horror manga, written by Yu Sasuga and illustrated by Kenichi Tachibana, is set to resume serialization after a five-year hiatus.
According to Viz and to the manga’s official X account, the manga will recommence in the 18th issue of Weekly Young Jump magazine, which comes out on April 4th.
Originally serialized in Miracle Jump magazine in January 2011, Sasuga and Tachibana later moved their sci-fi horror manga to Weekly Young Jump magazine in April 2012.
The manga has since been published in 22 tankōbon volumes, with its latest volume coming out in late 2018 in Japan before Yu Sasuga’s health issues forced the mangaka to go on an extended hiatus.
It isn’t the first time this happened either, as Terra Formars previously went on hiatus in March 2017 due to Sasuga’s health, before returning in April the following year.
Viz Media has been publishing the Terra Formars manga series since July, 2014, and now has all 22 volumes available in English.
They describe the Terra Formars plot like this:
After humanity’s first manned mission to the Red Planet was lost, a second expedition arrives.
The explorers prepare to exterminate the cockroaches that were used to transform the Martian environment, but are shocked to discover that the insects have mutated into giant, aggressive humanoids with one overriding goal—exterminate the humans!
However, this crew of explorers has each undergone the “Bugs Procedure,” terrifying experimental surgery designed to make them more than human…
The Terra Formars anime series
The manga’s vast popularity also led to an anime adaptation.
LIDENFILMS produced the first season, which aired 13 episodes in Fall 2014. A second season, jointly produced by LIDENFILMS and TYO Animations, then premiered in Spring 2016.
Additionally, a two-episode OVA was bundled with the 21st and 22nd volumes of the manga in 2018.
There is no word yet on where the plot of Terra Formars will go from here but, if it’s been a while since you’ve read all 22 volumes, you might want to read them again so you can be ready for volume 23 when it eventually releases.
