Aina the End’s ‘Aikotoba‘ music video is the most beautiful thing
Of the two The Apothecary Diaries theme songs — the opening theme ‘Hana ni Natte‘ (‘Become a Flower‘) by Ryokuoushoku Shakai, and the ending theme ‘Aikotoba‘ (‘The Spell‘) by Aina the End – both of which I love, Aina the End’s ‘Aikotoba‘ has been the one I have had on repeat on Spotify the most.
Not only for Aina’s gorgeously husky voice (a big reason why I have been a huge fan of the Japanese singer for years), but also for that catchy melody.
And for the way the song, even if you don’t speak a word of Japanese, just has a feel that seems to embody just who The Apothecary Diaries‘ wonderful Maomao has turned out to be.
Now this week, Aina the End’s ‘Aikotoba‘ got an official music video and, if I didn’t utterly adore the song before, I would now.
Because, every single frame of Aina the End’s ‘Aikotoba‘ music video is taken from The Apothecary Diaries anime series.
An anime, I personally think, is the best anime of 2023. Bar none.
But most definitely its most beautiful.
And a music video that shows just why The Apothecary Diaries has so quickly become such a smash hit worldwide.

The Toho Animation Studio/OLM-produced The Apothecary Diaries anime features so many visually stunning frames, I rewind each new episode many times when it comes out just to see the way those scenes shine.
But the ‘Aikotoba‘ music video goes one further by using some of the best scenes from the early episodes of the anime to illustrate just what The Apothecary Diaries ending theme song’s lyrics seem to say.
Scenes like the first time Jinshi meets Maomao knowing she can read, scenes proving just how much Jinshi freaks Maomao out, those that show the lonely life of consorts like Lishu, the way Jinshi gets embarrassed when he admits to himself how much he likes Maomao, and the events that proceed “the slap“, as well as those scenes where we realize Maomao is such a freak she practically has an orgasm when she eats poison.

Then there are those other quieter but no less lovely scenes of exotic flowers, the luxuriousness of the palace and its grounds, how the camera pans around individual rooms with their beautifully drawn furnishings, and the way the fabrics shown in them look as though, if you reached out and touched them, you could actually feel their softness and warmth.
