To Be Hero X English dub premieres same day as original Chinese donghua – VAs announced

To be Hero X gets an English dub

Well, this is interesting and unusual news from the donghua universe.



Not only is the highly-anticipated superhero-themed donghua To Be Hero X premiering internationally on Crunchyroll tomorrow, but the Chinese anime is also getting an English dub at the same time.

Something that rarely happens, and never on the same day as the original animated series releases.

Along with the announcement of a To Be Hero X English dub, Crunchyroll also confirmed the To Be Hero X English dub cast, which features several of the industry’s most experienced voice actors.

They are:

  • Nice voiced by Mauricio Ortiz-Segura (Kizuki in Anyway, I’m Falling in Love with You)
  • Miss J voiced by Stephanie Young (Robin in One Piece)
  • Moon voiced by Bryn Apprill (Anya in Spy x Family)
  • Enlighter voiced by Landon McDonald (Ranpo in Bungou Stray Dogs)
  • Cheng Yaojin voiced by Larry Brantley (Toucan in Africa no Salaryman)
  • Shand voiced by John Burgmeier (Freed in Fairy Tail)
  • Alexander voiced by Jim Foronda (Yukku in Blue Lock)
  • Jam voiced by Alex Hom (Gaoshun in The Apothecary Diaries)
  • Leo voiced by Phil Parsons (Lord Borg in Nina the Starry Bride)
  • Oliver voiced by Daniel Van Thomas (Adonis in Bye Bye, Earth)

The English dub is being directed by Emily Fajardo (I’m in Love with the Villainess/One Piece).

To Be Hero X details

The donghua (aka Tu Bian Yingxiong X) is a collaboration between Chinese animation studios Pb Animation, LAN Studio, BeDream and Paper Plane Animation, along with the involvement of several other studios.


A cool behind-the-scenes video was released about the studios working together to create the series a couple of months ago.

It is being directed by acclaimed Chinese director Li Haoling (Link Click/Heaven Official’s Blessing).

To Be Hero X is being co-produced by Chinese production company Bilibili, Japanese entertainment company Aniplex and Chinese company BeDream.

Bilibili explains the To Be Hero X premise like this:

This is a world where heroes are forged by people’s trust, and the one who garners the most trust is hailed as—X.

Here, trust can be quantified, and these values are displayed on everyone’s wrists. With enough trust points, even an ordinary person can gain superpowers and become a superhero who saves the world.

Yet, the ever-fluctuating trust values make the path of a hero fraught with uncertainty.

Look out for the To Be Hero X English dub to hit Crunchyroll at the same time as its Chinese-language original tomorrow.
