What’s the Best-Selling Video Game of All-Time when you don’t include mobile?
It always makes me laugh when someone who thinks they are ‘smart’ or ‘funny’ comes onto a Minecraft YouTube video and says “Is Minecraft still a thing?”, as if it’s a game nobody is playing anymore. Or a game nobody should be making videos about.
Meanwhile, several million copies of Minecraft are still sold every month, and over 55 million people play it every month. Yep, 55 MILLION.
And, yes, Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time when you exclude mobile sales. (Tetris is, if you include mobile sales, but most of its over 400 million sales are on phones). It is also a game that is now available on every gaming platform, including Raspberry Pi.
So how many copies of Minecraft have been sold?
As of the end of February this year, the last time Microsoft announced their latest Minecraft sales figures, Minecraft had sold more than 122 million copies world-wide. This also does not include the free copy all new owners of Windows 10 get, as Microsoft only includes the actual bought games in that 122 million total.
In fact, out of every video game ever made, only two games have ever sold over 100 million copies. Tetris and Minecraft.
So, the next time somebody uploads a Minecraft video to YouTube (which happens several times a second), and you’re tempted to make a ‘smart’ remark. Don’t.
Or you’ll just go down as another one of those people who doesn’t seem to know what’s going on in the video game world. And, if you call yourself a gamer? That, it’s kind of sad.
And, if you are not one of the 122 million people that currently own a copy of Minecraft, it is not to late to join us.
