Asta’s voice actor is phenomenal in the role
Black Clover is easily in my Top 5 best anime series of all time.
Not only for the fabulous character ensemble unmatched in any other anime, the superb animation, beautiful art style, amazing action scenes and music, but also for the voice actors who are utterly phenomenal in every part.
In particular, the Japanese voice actor who plays Asta in a huge role that requires him to speak in almost every scene and to scream at the top of his lungs through most of it (watch the video clip below to hear just some of those screams — man, that must have hurt, eh?).
What I always found amazing about the actor who voices Asta as well is that, when he was chosen for the main lead in Black Clover, he had only ever had one tiny part in another anime before.
That of a classmate in the 2017 Eromanga Sensei.
But, in the same year, the Japanese voice actor was chosen as the voice of Asta and, thus, was expected to carry a huge responsibility in the production.
A responsibility that could cause Black Clover to become one of the most successful anime series of all time (it is), or have fans turning off if they didn’t like Asta’s voice or felt he wasn’t believable.
At the time, the voice actor was still only 22-years-old. Yet he took on the role, and delivered probably better than even the director expected.
So who voices Asta in Black Clover?
With the new Black Clover film, Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, now streaming via Netflix (and very popular, I might add), many people are probably wondering who voices Asta, and what kind of experience the actor has had in the years since he first took the role.
That actor’s name is Gakuto Kajiwara (梶原 岳人 in Japanese), and he was born on November 28th, 1994 in Osaka Prefecture, Japan.
He started off his voice acting career in the same year he accepted the Black Clover role in the aforementioned Eromanga Sensei, as one of Megumi’s classmates.
He also had a couple of other very minor roles in the same year in anime like Inuyashiki and The Idolmaster SideM, but it was his phenomenal performance as Asta in Black Clover that put him on the map.
Since then, Gakuto Kajiwara has starred in several other anime series. Including playing:
- Nori Kamitsuki in You Don’t Know Gunma Yet
- Shinra Kusakabe in Fire Force
- Saku Otonomiya in Actors: Songs Connection
- Hiiro Amagi in Kiss of Life
- Hiiro Ryuugasaki in Shadowverse
- Hitohito Tadano in Komi Can’t Communicate
- Junta Hayami in Romantic Killer
- Allen Sugasano in Paradox Live the Animation (upcoming)
He would likely have been awarded even more main roles, if much of his career wasn’t taken up with voicing Asta for:
- 4 seasons of Black Clover (a total of 170 episodes)
- in several Black Clover specials
- in the full-length film released this month — Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King.
Even so Kajiwara has also had supporting roles in at least 40 other anime, and voiced characters in more than 20 video games.
Not bad for someone who only started voice acting in 2017, eh?
Gakuto Kajiwara the singer
Oh, and just in case that wasn’t enough, Gakuto Kajiwara is also a singer who has performed one of the theme songs for Black Clover — the song ‘A Walk’, which became the anime’s 12th ending theme song, and was played at the end of Black Clover, Episode 141-157.
You can listen to that below.
And, of course, watch the Best Asta Moments video from Crunchyroll to remember just how good a voice actor Gakuto Kajiwara turned out to be.
Because, man, it would be hard to beat that.
