With just two episodes out, the new Science SARU anime DAN DA DAN has already hit #2 on the Netflix Top 10 Non-English TV Shows chart for the period October 7th to October 13th.
Anyone who has been watching DAN DA DAN, however, won’t be remotely surprised as the anime has already turned out to be one of the standouts of the Fall, 2024 anime season due to its amazing art style, weird and wonderful plot and all around batshit craziness.
According to Netflix, DAN DA DANÂ hit their Top 10 Non-English TV Shows chart this week due to being viewed 4.3 million times for a total of 3.5 million hours watched so far.
The Japanese anime is also currently in the Top 10 in 45 countries, including a huge chunk of Asia, three countries in Africa, six European countries and 21 countries in the Americas including the United States.
Not bad for a 23-minute show that really deviates from the norm, eh?
What is the DAN DA DAN plot?
DAN DA DAN is animated by Science Saru, and directed by Fuuga Yamashiro (episode director of the equally visually gorgeous The Tatami Time Machine Blues).
Hiroshi Seko (Wind Breaker) is in charge of series composition and scripts, with those phenomenal character designs from Takeru Noda (animation director for Mushoku Tensei) and Naoyuki Onda (Psycho-Pass).
The anime tells the story of Momo Ayase, a believer in ghosts, who meets Ken Takakura, an alien-obsessed boy.
The two begin an argument about which of those two things is actually real, with the result being the two split up and head to places that are supposed to be supernatural and extra-terrestrial in nature just to prove the other one wrong.
The problem soon turns out to be that both ghosts and aliens are actually real.
And that’s when things start to go absolutely nuts.
Speaking of nuts, the DAN DA DAN opening theme song ‘Otonoke‘ is by Creepy Nuts, and it is an absolute banger as well (the OP has almost 17 million plays on Spotify already). Listen to that in the anime’s opening animation below.
Start watching DAN DA DAN now on Netflix, and you will quickly see why it has become a big hit on the streaming platform so damned fast.
