Light the Dark production details

Filming for the Chinese thriller began in Chongqing earlier in the year and ended today, June 17th, 2025.

Written by Dai Zheng Yang (I’m So Pretty), it also features a supporting cast that includes Ren Zhong (Everlasting Longing), Zhang Guo Qiang (Legend of Zang Hai), Guo Cheng (Double Happiness), Chen Chu Han (Tell No One), Peng Bo (Youthful Glory), Sun Da Chuan (The City of Sunlight) and Wang Tong Hui (Blossom).

Baidu Encyclopedia explains the Light the Dark plot like this (the plot synopsis does feature many spoilers so, if you prefer going into a new drama blind, avoid reading):

In 1997, in the small southwestern city of Wugang, the Chen family live in a dormitory building assigned by the local petroleum unit.

Chen Shan (played by Chen Zheyuan) lives with his family: his father, Chen Fu, is the top leader of a petroleum pipeline construction project; his mother, Zhang Wenying (played by Jiang Hongbo), is a key designer at the Petroleum Design Institute; and his elder sister, Chen Ying (played by Jiang Xin), works in the archives office at the supply station.

The family live a harmonious and happy life, and so it seems that Chen Shan will follow in his parents’ footsteps and work in the petroleum system.

However, a sudden gas pipeline explosion changes the course of their lives. Chen Fu dies in the accident, and Zhang Wenying becomes a casualty of internal power struggles within the petroleum system.

Devastated by the blow, Chen Shan leaves home alone and takes a job with an emergency repair team.

Four years later, the southwestern petroleum sector has caught the wave of rapid economic development, and families across the region are enjoying middle-class lifestyles.

Chen Shan has become the head of a construction team, known as “Brother Shan,” yet he lives like a walking corpse, mentally trapped in the past.

When another explosion occurs, eerily similar to the one years ago, former Design Institute Director Geng Jian (Zhang Guoqiang), who had lost out in the factional struggles of the past, also becomes involved.

It is then that Chen Shan decides to follow clues to uncover the hidden truth behind the original accident—only to find that more and more people are mysteriously connected to the case.

In other words, if you enjoy a good mystery thriller where, hopefully, justice is eventually served, Light the Dark is one to keep an eye on.

Light the Dark is co-produced by Zhejiang Dongyang Fosun Pictures Co., Ltd. and iQIYI.

Light the Dark now heads into post-production, and will then apply for a distribution license. If/when that is granted, we should hear more about its premiere.

We will keep you updated as more information drops.
