For the supernatural/fantasy donghua fans among us (and that includes me), Bai Yao Pu, Season 5 (aka Fairies Album, Season 5) was recently confirmed as premiering some time in 2025.
A Fairies Album, Season 5 poster was also released featuring protagonist and spirit doctor Tao Yao front and center.
The upcoming donghua follows on from the fourth season of the hit Chinese anime, which aired its last episode on May 3rd, 2024.
So, yep, we are now coming up to a year since we last checked in with Tao Yao, Mo Ya and Liu Gonzi and, man, don’t we miss them?
If you haven’t yet watched this superb donghua, however, here’s a quick primer for you.
What is Fairies Album based on?
The Chinese anime Fairies Album (Bai Yao Pu) is based on the novel The Manual of a Hundred Demons by author Sha Luo Shuang Shu.
There is also a popular manhua adaptation written by the same author and illustrated by Yu You Le, and with its 131 chapters being published between February, 2019 and November, 2022.
What is the Fairies Album plot about?
For those of you who are not familiar with the Fairies Album donghua, but love a good tale rooted in myth and legend, the plot for the long-running animated series goes something like this:
The story follows Tao Yao, a mysterious and skilled physician who specializes in treating supernatural beings, or “yao” (demons and spirits).
Accompanied by a young monk named Mo Ya, she travels through a fantastical world filled with mythical creatures, each with their own unique stories and struggles.
As Tao Yao interacts with these yao, she uncovers their pasts, resolves their conflicts, and helps them find peace.
The animated series blends elements of fantasy, folklore, and emotional storytelling, while exploring themes of redemption, compassion, and the complex relationships between humans and supernatural beings.
The donghua is known for its beautiful animation, rich world-building, and poignant narratives, and its soft but stunning visuals.
