This week, I re-watched the first season of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru no Darō ka?).
One of my favorite anime series, and one I get so engrossed in, binge-watching in just a few hours is an easy feat.
One thing I had forgotten about the series, though, was how cool the Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? opening theme was, and how long it was going to stick in my head hours after watching.
Called ‘Hey World‘, and sung by Yuka Iguchi (A Place Further Than The Universe, A Certain Magical Index III), the theme song is the perfect introduction to the first season of this amazing series.
After all with lyrics like:
“taoretatte hazukashikunai mou ichido tachiagareba
ato sukoshi de tadori tsukesou na yokan ga shiteru”“If I fall, I’m not ashamed, as long as I stand up again
I get the feeling I’ll make it if I struggle just a little further“
it sounds hopeful, which is how Bell Cranel feels about his ability as a hero, even if his skills are terrible at first. The melody has the same feeling of hopefulness as well.
Yet the melody also has an exciting edge to it — and so conjures up images of Bell’s performance in the dungeon.
Especially when he first starts out and almost gets killed by the minotaur.
‘Hey World‘ by Yuka Iguchi was composed by Koji Makaino, with lyrics by Kiyoshi Matsuo. It was arranged by Hiroshi Sasaki.
And it’s just too good to skip over.
Listen to the short version of ‘Hey World‘ by Yuka Iguchi — the Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? opening theme — and watch the series’ animation intro that accompanies it in the video below.
