The fantasy light novel series Once Upon a Witch’s Death is getting an anime adaptation and, along with that announcement, we also got its first key visual, a cute trailer, a cast announcement and character art for the two main characters earlier today.
An official website has also been launched, as well as an X account.
Yep, the production committee has been working hard and, from the looks of things, Once Upon a Witch’s Death is already quite a ways along in the production process!
The Once Upon a Witch’s Death light novel series
The upcoming fantasy anime is based on the light novel series of the same name written by Saka and illustrated by Torefuji.
The novels are being published in English by Yen Press, with one volume currently out, and with the American publisher saying this about the plot:
On Meg’s seventeenth birthday, she learns that she only has one year left to live. Her mentor—the Eternal Witch, Faust—explains that she is cursed and the only way to save herself is to grow a seed of life using one thousand tears of joy. Of course, such tears aren’t easy to come by.
As Meg begins her quest, she finds herself drawn into the lives of her friends and neighbors in ways she never imagined. By sharing their burdens and using her magic to comfort them, she learns how precious those moments of connection can be even in the face of death.
The anime is being directed by Atsushi Nigorikawa (A Destructive God Sits Next to Me), with Keiichirou Oochi (The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses) in charge of series composition, and Yukishizuku (Smile of the Arsnotoria the Animation) designing the characters.
EMT Squared (Train to the End of the World) is in charge of anime production.
As for the anime’s cast, Meg Raspberry is being voiced by Yoshino Aoyama (Hitori in Bocchi the Rock!), while the Eternal Witch, Faust is being played by Yoshiko Sakakibara (Joushuu Kasei in Psycho-Pass).
Their character illustrations were also released earlier today.
Check out the first Once Upon a Witch’s Death trailer below, as it is adorably cute.
