Shangri-La Frontier, Season 2 announcement visual confirms all our favorite characters will be back
One of the anime I hoped would get a second season after it ended this week is Shangri-La Frontier, as who wouldn’t want to see more of the zaniness of Sunraku, Emul, Arthur Pencilgon, OiKatzo and even stalker Psyger-0.
Especially as, during Episode 25 of Season 1, we were promised by The Professor, leader of the clan The Library, we could learn the secret of the world of SFL if Sunraku agrees to ally with them.
Thankfully, my wish came true for most of the Winter 2024 anime I loved.
Including Shangri-La Frontier, whose Season 2 was announced earlier today via the anime’s official X account.
That Shangri-La Frontier, Season 2 confirmation also came with a ridiculously cute visual featuring all five main characters — including Psyger-0, who is still skulking in the background hoping Sunraku (aka Rakuro) will eventually notice her — and a short announcement video.
Like most teaser videos, The Shangri-La Frontier, Season 2 announcement video doesn’t give away anything about the second season of the fantasy anime, as it only consists of scenes of Kazuma fighting his most difficulty battles.
It does confirm, though, the welcome news we won’t have to wait too long for Shangri-La Frontier, Season 2 to premiere as the anime is already in production, and will premiere in October, 2024.
The second season of the hit anime will also consist of two cours, just like Season 1, so very likely another 24 or 25 episodes are heading our way. Fingers crossed.
New Shangri-La Frontier, Season 2 characters
You can’t really say the two characters just announced as regulars for Season 2 are exactly “new”, as both did appear in the final episode of Season 1.
The way they were portrayed in the first season’s final episode too, it seemed as though we’d be seeing a lot more of them.
It turns out we will be, as pink-haired, gravely-voiced Kyoju, leader of The Library clan, and Aramis, that annoying blue cat from Cazzeria, have been confirmed as appearing in Season 2.
They even had their adorable character designs released:
Kyoju is being voiced by Joji Nakata aka George Nakata (Hijikata Toshizō in Golden Kamuy), while Aramis is being brought to life by Hiromu Mineta (Yatora Yaguchi in Blue Period).
The Shangri-La Frontier staff
The anime is directed by Toshiyuki Kubooka (Handyman Saitou in Another World), with Kazuyuki Fudeyasu (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) in charge of series composition, and Ayumi Kurashima (Devilman: Crybaby) both designing characters and chief animation director.
Studio C2C (Reincarnated as a Sword) is in charge of anime production.
The Shangri-La Frontier anime series is based on the web novel series and manga written by Katarina.
Kodansha USA is publishing the manga in English, with 15 volumes now out.
They describe the Shangri-La Frontier plot this way:
Second-year high school student Rakuro Hizutome loves nothing more than finding so-called “trash games” and beating the crap out of them.
When he decides to change things up by playing a new, “god-tier” VR game known as Shangri-La Frontier (a.k.a. SLF), he does what he does best: min-maxes, skips the prologue, and jumps straight into action!
Rakuro may be a seasoned gamer, but a meeting with an old rival will change the fate of every SLF player forever.
Clad in nothing but shorts and a bird mask, Rakuro (player name: Sunraku) launches into the world of SLF.
Things are going well at first as he takes down a goblin, a bunny, and even a python. But then Sunraku comes up against a huge, hard-hitting wolf known as Lycagon the Nightslayer.
Will Sunraku’s years of “trash game” experience be enough, or is he about to suffer a rude awakening just a few hours into his SLF adventure?
Like the first season, Season 2 of Shangri-La Frontier will stream on Crunchyroll.
