The first season of the Chinese historical martial arts donghua The Demon Hunter (aka Cang Yuan Tu) ended back in December, 2023, so it’s almost a year since we last heard from Meng Chuan.
At least in the regular season (I don’t count the Cang Yuan Tu: Dongning Fu Fanwai Pian special season as that, in my opinion, was not up to the caliber of Season 1).
And now, it seems, the long-awaited The Demon Hunter, Season 2 (aka Cang Yuan Tu, Season 2) is finally almost upon us, with the donghua’s official Weibo account this weekend announcing a some time in December, 2024 premiere date.
Along with that, we also got three gorgeous character posters of Meng Chuan, Liu Qiyue and Yan Jin, which you can check out in full size below.
The latter two, by the way, I hope we learn more about in Season 2, as their backstory was still minimal in the first season.
Here then are Meng Chuan, Liu Qiyue and Yan Jin’s character posters — with the stunning art style you probably expect.

In earlier promotions for the upcoming The Demon Hunter, Season 2, a short teaser trailer was released on YOUKU Animation’s YouTube channel.
Called The Demon Hunter 2, The mystery of the thousand-year chess game, the trailer seems to suggest we will be getting a heckuva lot more suspense and intrigue before the next season is over. (Does anyone trust the people from Yuanchu Mountain, and ‘The General’, because I sure as hell don’t).
And, of course, much of at least the first part of the second season will likely involve Meng Chuan competing in the trials to be accepted by Yuanchu Mountain.
Don’t forget, he’s close to the bottom of the list of 500 geniuses who will be taking the test!
The Demon Hunters (Cang Yuan Tu) plot
And, just in case you haven’t started watching The Demon Hunters (you should, it’s excellent), but are looking for a good martial arts donghua, here is a quick look at the plot.
Six-year-old Meng Chuan is living an almost idyllic life in a small village with his mother and father. He plays football with his friends, gets into trouble with the neighbors, and is an all-around normal child.
Until one day, after he and his mother spend time on a swing up in the hills, a slew of monsters headed by a strange person descend upon the village and start killing everyone.
Suddenly, Meng Chuan’s mother becomes an supernaturally-skilled warrior — the White Saintess — and destroys every monster in the village while saving her son.Â
But, one of the last monsters still alive tragically takes her life right in front of her young son.
It is then Meng Chuan, with the same spiritual energy his mother had had, transforms into a young Saint himself and kills the monster that murdered his mother.
Later, he learns his mother was a Saint from the far away Yuanchu Mountain, and his father is a member of the Meng Sect — another of the powerful Saint sects.
Soon, young Meng Chuan finds himself being admitted into a Taoist monastery where he begins to practice everything he needs to know to properly become a true Saint.
And, thus begins a story of retribution and salvation.
We will keep you updated here at Leo Sigh, as more information about The Demon Hunter, Season 2 is released. As well as when a specific December premiere date is announced.
Until then, you can watch the first season of The Demon Hunter via YOUKU now.
