What’s The Apothecary Diaries, Ep 9 insert song heard as Maomao and Jinshi talk about death?

With every new episode released, the TOHO Animation-produced anime series The Apothecary Diaries just gets better and better.

Not only for its stunning art style, superb animation, fascinating plot, talented voice actors, the anime’s wonderful sense of humor mixed with such beautifully touching scenes you play them again and again, but also for its music.

Music like the two theme songs — Ryokuoushoku Shakai ‘Hana ni Natte‘ opening theme and Aina the End’s ‘Aikotoba‘ ending theme — as well as the insert songs used in various episodes.

The first insert song — Yuiko Ohara and Arisa Okehazama’s ‘Omoikaze’ from Episode 3 as Concubine Fuyou is given to the military officer — and now The Apothecary Diaries, Episode 9’s insert song.

That gorgeously sad song was played on the latest episode of The Apothecary Diaries as Maomao and Jinshi talk about the dead maid’s death being either murder or suicide, and Maomao tells him you cannot cheat fate if your time has arrived.

What is The Apothecary Diaries, Episode 9 insert song then, and where can you listen to it or buy it?

The Apothecary Diaries, Episode 9 insert song was officially released today

The song featured on The Apothecary Diaries as Maomao and Jinshi are talking about death and poisoning is called ‘Towards the Light‘ by  XAI and Satoru Kōsaki.

It was officially released today via Milan Records/Sony Music Entertainment.

XAI (agency profile) is a Japanese singer who is known for performing the anime theme songs for Godzilla 1: Kaijuu Wakusei (song ‘White Out‘), Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle (song ‘The Sky Falls‘) and Godzilla: The Planet Eater (song ‘live and die‘).

She also teamed up with Japanese composer Hiroyuki Sawano with the music project SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:XAI’ to perform The Seven Deadly Sins: Grudge of Edinburgh anime theme song ‘Lemonade‘ late last year.

This time, XAI has teamed up with another well-known Japanese composer, Satoru Kōsaki, to create the new The Apothecary Diaries insert song Towards the Light‘.

Satoru Kōsaki himself is also known for his massive contributions to anime music, having written theme songs for anime like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, Bakemonogatari, Working!!, Beastars, Aharen-san wa Hakarenai, The Idolmaster and many many others.

In other words, ‘Towards the Light‘ by XAI and Satoru Kōsaki is a song from a bit of an anime dream team, if the truth be known.

The song itself, by the way, is now available for purchase or streaming via the usual platforms.

You can also listen to the short version of ‘Towards the Light’, and watch the animation it accompanied, on the snippet from The Apothecary Diaries, Episode 9 via TOHO Animation Studios YouTube channel (watch below).

Meanwhile, The Apothecary Diaries, Episode 9 — the episode the ‘Towards the Light‘ insert song was featured in — is now streaming on Crunchyroll.

In my opinion, the art featured in its scenes is the anime’s most beautiful yet.
