The minute I started watching the comedy fantasy donghua Fabulous Beasts, I knew my all-time favorite Chinese voice actor was playing the role of Sibuxiang.
And masterfully doing it too.
A voice actor that, along with people like the also incredibly popular Bian Jiang, Qiao Shiyu and Ji Guanlin, is one of China’s top voice talents, as he voices a huge number of characters in donghua and C-dramas.
One of my favorite performances, though, is his voicing of Sibuxiang — a mythological beast whose smoothly velvet voice could happily put you to sleep.
If you didn’t know he was probably plotting something you might not like.
Who voices Sibuxiang in Fabulous Beasts?
That voice actor, of course, is Zhang Jie (also sometimes known as Ketsu or Jet), and he is the voice of many of the donghua characters you probably already love.
What other donghua has Zhang Jie voiced characters in? You may be surprised.
In fact, here are just a few of the donghua characters Zhang Jie has brilliantly brought to life:
- The King’s Avatar (YeXiu/YeQiu)
- Please Take My Brother Away! (Wan Sui)
- Love Between Fairy and Devil (Dongfang Qingcang)
- No Doubt In Us (Xiao Jinyun)
- The Magic Chef of Ice and Fire (Nian Bing Rong)
- Spare Me, Great Lord! (Nie Ting)
- Spicy Girl (Xiao Jian)
- Those Years I Opened a Zoo (Luya)
- Youths and Golden Coffin (Wuxin)
- My Holy Weapon (Xao Bai)
- Hitori no Shita – The Outcast (Lingyu Zhang)
- Rakshasa Street (Tianyou Lu)
- Mo Dao Zu Shi / Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Wei WuXian/Wei Ying, Mo XuanYu)
and on and on and on.
If Zhang Jie’s voice acting in donghua wasn’t enough, he is also one of the biggest stars in Chinese dramas where most actors have their original voices dubbed into Chinese, due to there being too many regional accents in China that don’t fit into the ‘Beijing norm’.
You can find that full list of voice acting roles via Wikipedia.
So, now you know who voices Sibuxiang in Fabulous Beasts, and doesn’t he do it beautifully!
