Frieren manga sells 7 million copies in 2 months – more than most mangaka will sell in a lifetime

With the enormous success of the anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, it shouldn’t be any surprise that the sales of the manga it is based on have soared since the anime premiered on September 29th.

What will probably be a surprise, though, is just how many copies of the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End manga series have been sold since September 29th worldwide.

So many, in fact, most other mangakas will never see those kinds of sales figures during their entire lifetime.

Just how many copies of the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End manga have been sold since the anime premiered then?

More than 7 million.

Yes, you read that number correctly — the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End manga has sold 7 million units in the last two months.

Thousands more copies are still being sold daily.

Official Frieren sales data announced today

According to a tweet on the official Frieren X account earlier today, the total sales of the best-selling manga series are now over 17 million units.

That number includes both digital and paper copies, with 10 million copies already having been sold right up to the anime series kicking off.

That means 10 million copies were sold in the first three years of the manga’s publication (the manga’s first volume came out in Japan in August, 2020), followed by the next 7 million sales in two months.

Frieren mangaka Kanehito Yamada and illustrator Tsukasa Abe must be beyond thrilled.

As for how many volumes of Frieren are currently available for those who haven’t yet bought them, there are currently 11 volumes out in Japanese, with 9 available in English via Viz Media, and Volume 10 due to be published on February 20th, 2024.

Meanwhile, the 12th Japanese volume comes out on December 18th.

What is Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End about?

The manga series, and the anime it is based on, follow young elf Frieren who understands intellectually that humans live much shorter lives than elves, but does not realize how short until one of the people she has adventured with for 10 years has died.

As Viz Media explains the Frieren plot in the Volume 1 synopsis:

Decades after their victory, the funeral of one her friends confronts Frieren with her own near immortality.

Because of this, Frieren sets out to fulfill the last wishes of her comrades, and finds herself beginning a new adventure…

You can currently grab the first nine English language volumes of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End via Viz Media, and pre-order Volume 10 on the site as well.

The superb anime that is based on the hit manga series is now streaming on Crunchyroll worldwide, with 13 episodes of the planned 25-episode series out so far.
