What is the plot of the World of Immortals donghua? Who are the main characters?

The World of Immortals (also known as Chang Sheng Jie in Chinese) is a donghua based on the popular novel by Chen Dong (Tomb of Fallen Gods).

Its first episodes premiered on October 29th via WeTV and Tencent Video, with Episode 9 releasing earlier this week and the donghua currently scheduled to have 26 episodes in its first season.

Here’s an overview of the plot of World of Immortals, and the donghua’s main characters. Both of which are based on the currently available information, ie: with just 9 episodes of the fantasy action donghua released so far:

Plot synopsis of World of Immortals

The story revolves around the concept of immortality, in a world where it is both a coveted prize and a perilous curse.

The central narrative follows protagonist Xiao Chen, an ordinary man who inadvertently gets transported into the vast World of Immortals after an immortal martial artist distorts space and severs connections with the mortal realm.

This world he suddenly arrives in is filled with mythical creatures, ancient secrets, and endless dangers, and it is now up to Xiao Chen to avoid the people and creatures that would happily kill him, to make friends with them or, of course, run.

Setting of The World of Immortals

The World of Immortals is a vast, uncharted realm where even the mightiest are destined to decay and die unless they can achieve true immortality.

Xiao Chen must navigate this treacherous new environment, survive against powerful adversaries, and uncover the secrets of immortality with the goal of returning home to his waiting fiancée, or to find his place in this new world instead.

Main Characters:

Xiao Chen: The protagonist, who accidentally ends up in the World of Immortals while being chased by a vengeful princess (an absolute pain in the ass). He’s resourceful and determined, striving to survive and understand this new world while also making friends with some of the most unlikely creatures/people.

Zhao Lin’er: A royal goddess or princess who initially pursues Xiao Chen for a crime he didn’t commit, thus leading to his entry into the immortal realm.

Zhao Lin’er is antagonistic towards Xiao Chen, as she spends the first nine episodes (at least) attempting to kill him. But, certain events in the first few episodes of the donghua hint that her motivations and background might be more complex as the story unfolds. (Hint after 20+ episodes: It turns out, they’re not!)

Keke: A character introduced in Episode 8 as Xiao Chen’s new friend, and described as cute.

This fluffy, white animal character (who is adorable in these World of Immortals wallpapers) may play a significant role in Xiao Chen’s journey through the immortal world, as he is not only incredibly powerful, but may potentially offer both companionship and unique insights into helping Xiao Chen more easily navigate the treacherous lands of the World of Immortals.

Fingers crossed.

Plot progressions

In the first episode of the World of Immortals donghua, Xiao Chen suddenly finds himself transported to Dragon Island, a place teeming with legendary and extinct creatures from the mortal realm.

His primary goal here is survival in an environment where everything and almost everyone he meets is either stronger and/or deadlier.

As he moves from the island to the broader immortal world, Xiao Chen faces numerous enemies, explores ancient myths, and integrates with the local culture.

His journey involves battling fierce creatures, dealing with political machinations, and forming alliances or rivalries with the most unlikely of bedfellows.

While all this is going on, Xiao Chen evolves from a man caught in extraordinary circumstances to someone who begins to understand and potentially manipulate the powers and secrets of immortality.

His relationship with Zhao Lin’er, which is currently extremely antagonistic (well, she is trying to kill him), might evolve from enmity to something more nuanced, depending on the narrative’s direction.

With only nine episodes of the first season currently available to watch, however, the full scope of Xiao Chen’s adventures remains to unfold.

Meanwhile, it is clear his journey involves discovering the true nature of immortality, cultivating to higher levels as fast as he can, facing moral dilemmas, and navigating through a tapestry of historical and mythical elements.

While telling any creature/person who tries to mess with him, don’t bother.

You can watch the first nine episode of World of Immortal via Tencent’s WeTV, or on Tencent Donghua’s YouTube channel now.

And yep, I 1,000 percent recommend it as, animation-wise and design-wise, it is superb.
