Listen to Simple Minds’ ‘Someone Somewhere (In Summertime)’ from The InBetween — it’s luscious and gorgeous

Do you ever hear a song and think “Christ, I used to love that song during another lifetime?”

As a former radio DJ, that happens to me often. Songs suddenly pop up that I haven’t heard in decades. Even though, at one point, they were some of my most favorite tracks.

Take Simple Minds’ ‘Someone Somewhere (In Summertime)’, which was featured on this week’s episode of the NBC supernatural drama series The InBetween — The InBetween, Season 1, Episode 9, “The Devil’s Refugee”.

A track, and the album it came from, that I used to play on my radio show just about every night for months.

And a track that popped up again last night on The InBetween twice — at the beginning of the episode as Millie is dancing to music on her Walkman, and then again at the end of the episode as Cassie also dances to it.

Simple Minds’ ‘Someone Somewhere (In Summertime)‘ is from the Scottish indie rock band’s fifth studio album  New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84).

It was released as the third single from the album, didn’t do as well as the previous two singles but, to this day, is probably the band’s most popular song.

I loved ‘Someone Somewhere (In Summertime)‘ way back when, as the chorus was so addictive, Charlie Burchill’s guitar is gorgeous and the whole thing just gave me such a feeling of “I can do anything”.

As for the album New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84), it was a massive hit on the alternative radio station I worked for (97X). Not just at the radio station either, but at stations all over the U.S. and the UK, as well as making it to the number 3 spot on the UK Albums chart.

To this day, New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84) is the album Simple Minds‘ fans seem to love the most. It is also one that is often named as one of the best pop albums of the 1980s, and was even included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
