While last week’s episode of the sci-fi anime series Kaiju No. 8 was more of a filler episode than the high-action show we have become used to, tonight’s Kaiju No. 8, Episode 10 definitely made up for it.
As this recap of one of the most exciting 23 minutes in anime history I have ever watched proves.
Kaiju No. 8 Episode 10 recap
The episode, titled “Secret Revealed,” opens with Hoshina continuing his intense battle against Kaiju No. 10, which has transformed into a giant humanoid form with a formidable fortitude level of 9.0.
The fight is fierce, with Hoshina using his skills and knowledge to hold his own against the powerful Kaiju but, even as he continues to slash away at the Kaiju, it simply regenerates itself and closes its wounds.
Meanwhile, Kafka is in a state of conflict, torn between his duty as a member of the Defense Force and his secret identity as Kaiju No. 8. He is worried about Hoshina’s safety, but he also knows Hoshina is unaware of Kafka’s true nature.
When he hears Kaiju No. 10 roar, however, and knows Hoshina is in danger, he runs off towards where the two are fighting.
Hoshina, of course, is still fighting but suddenly gets a message it has been 10 minutes since he activated his suit’s maximum release. That means he needs to shut the suit down within the next minute or it will overheat, and could kill him.
It’s at this point he climbs high up in a building in an attempt to hit the Kaiju from the rear, but is noticed by the Kaiju and is slammed into a building several blocks away.
As the people in the control room believe he is dead, we then see a flashback of Hoshina as a child with his father, and his father telling him he cannot join the Defense Force as “the era of blades has passed”.
Back to the present day, and Hoshina smilingly informs the control room he is still alive, as he had his shield set at maximum defense.
He then attempts to fight the Kaiju again, only to be slammed into rumble as his blades cannot injure it enough.
Another flashback has Hoshina remembering his father insisting, because he does not have the power necessary to use a gun, he should give up his dream. A Defense Force official then tells him the same thing.
But, as he continues to come up against brick walls, he meets Mina who, instead of telling him to give up, tells him she needs him.
She then explains while she uses the big guns, she cannot use blades, and she needs someone who does have the skill to kill small but still powerful Kaiju.
This is when we learn for the first time why Hoshina is so loyal to her.
Back to the fight, and Hoshina is making some headway when he is suddenly grabbed by the Kaiju.
Stuck in its hand, and noticed by Kafka, Kafka decides his only choice is to transform into Kaiju No. 8. Even though that will mean his secret is out.
But, as he is running towards the Kaiju, and partially transforming, Mina arrives with the big gun and blasts the Kaiju causing it to drop Hoshina who jumps safely to the ground.
Kikoru, armed with her new custom weapon, also then joins the fight against the Kaiju.
Her strength and skill prove to be a significant asset, and she manages to land several powerful blows against the Kaiju. She and Hoshina then work together to expose the Kaiju’s core so Mina can blast it away.
After the Kaiju has been destroyed, the Defense Force are congratulating each other, when all of a sudden an enormous red “Yoju bomb” appears over their heads. A bomb with the power of a nuclear weapon.
Kafka then realizes he has no choice but to transform. That way, even if his secret is out, he can at least save the lives of his friends.
So, he transforms into Kaiju No. 8, flies up into the air and pushes the Yoju bomb thousands more feet up into the air so that, when it does explode, while the damage is severe, most people still manage to survive the blast.
Of course, now everyone in the area knows Kafka is Kaiju No. 8 and, when he arrives back on the ground, he finds himself surrounded by Defense Force officers pointing guns at him, and Mina calling him by name and telling him she is taking him into custody.
The episode then ends on that cliffhanger.
Yep, Kaiju No. 8, Episode 10 managed to make up for the slower pace of last week’s episode now, didn’t it?
