My Dress-Up Darling, Episode 7 recap and review – Marin and Gojou bond over omurice and anime

My Dress-Up Darling, Episode 7 recap — “A Home Date with the Guy I Wuv Is the Best

The latest episode of My Dress-Up Darling kicks off with Marin, Gojou and JuJu still at Gojou’s house, and Marin begging Juju to do a group cosplay with her.

After all, Juju wants Gojou to make her a Shion-tan costume and Marin wants to go as Neon-oneesama, the sister of Shion-tan. So doing a group cosplay, with photos, makes sense to her.

At first, Juju wants nothing to do with it but, when she mentions she will pay for a studio so she can take professional photos of herself dressed as Shion-tan, Marin comments if Juju lets her cosplay as Neon-oneesama she will split the cost of the studio with her.

Studios being expensive and all, Juju begrudgingly relents, and a ‘group cosplay’ is agreed upon.

Gojou then announces he hasn’t seen the Flower Princess Blaze!! anime the characters originate from, and Marin tells him she owns the entire 126 episode DVD set.

“Borrow it”, she says.

And it’s then where the real emphasis of My Dress-Up Darling, Episode 7 kicks in, and why it’s titled A Home Date with the Guy I Wuv Is the Best” — because, don’t forget, Marin has just realized she’s in love with Gojou.

Marin and Gojou on a ‘home date’ and, oh boy, is Marin in Luuurve!!!

A day later, and Gojou is planning on heading to Marin’s apartment to get the Flower Princess Blaze!! DVD set.

“They’re heavy”, Marin tells him. “Can you come and pick them up?”

But, as Gojou is telling his grandfather, he is examining the new hina doll’s head Gojou has just finished, and telling Gojou his paint work has improved so much.

His grandfather then explains making Marin’s cosplay outfit probably helped improve his skills. Especially as he did her make-up too.

“If you want to be a great doll maker, you can’t just concentrate on the dolls. You should also observe other things”.

But… it’s at Marin’s apartment where things begin to heat up as, when Gojou arrives, Marin runs to open the door having overslept after watching an anime series late into the night.

It isn’t that she has overslept that throws Gojou for a loop, however, it’s that she is in a stage of half-undress when she answers the door, showing far more than she should be.

Being Marin, however, when she realizes how she unlocked the door, she doesn’t even care Gojou saw more than he planned to see. The only thing she is worried about is she isn’t wearing her colored contact lenses. Yikes!

The afternoon ends with Marin inviting Gojou to begin watching Flower Princess Blaze!! with her, and the pair settle down on the sofa to a day of anime watching.

Marin embarrassed over her feelings for Gojou

Only for Marin to suddenly realize “I’m on a home date with the boy I wuv!” and, at that, and in her eyes at least, Gojou suddenly becomes a god with stars and sparkly lights shining around his head.

And boy is she embarrassed!

Meanwhile, Gojou, sweet boy that he is, is completely oblivious to Marin’s feelings.

The day ends with Marin making omurice for the pair of them, and Gojou declaring it was “delicious”.

Back at home, Gojou is on the phone with Juju after sending her his designs for Shion-tan’s outfit.

Juju is blown away by how much detail he puts into just the design alone. She is also shocked when he tells her the cosplay outfit he made for Marin was the first one he ever created.

Juju then gives him tips on how to change Marin’s eye shape for future photos, and tells him her middle school sister takes her cosplay photos.

She recommends Gojou buy a good camera for Marin’s photos, rather than the phone camera they obviously used for the first outfit.

Juju explaining to Gojou how she changes her eye shape

Gojou asks her if her sister would mind showing him how to properly use a camera, and Juju agrees. As long as he will meet her and her sister at a family restaurant close to her house.

Gojou tells Marin that’s what he’s going to do, and Marin invites herself along. Excited, of course, to meet Juju’s sister — a couple of years younger than Juju, so obviously even tinier than Juju herself. Right?

“Oh she must be so CUTE!”, gushes Marin.

But when they get to the restaurant, Juju’s younger sister isn’t what either Marin or Gojou expect.

My Dress-Up Darling, Episode 7, review

One of the things I love about My Dress-Up Darling is how beautiful the art style is, and how intricately detailed each frame of every episode. This episode delivers that in spades.

From the posters on Marin’s bedroom wall, to the intricate details of the kitchen backdrop where she cooks Gojou’s omurice, every frame of this episode is so lovingly crafted, I found myself continually hitting Pause just to drink in the details.

The way Marin is drawn is unbelievably beautiful too.

From the moments of how simply gorgeous she is, to even those fan service moments, she is drawn to utter perfection.

As for the episode itself, while this one had sweet scenes between Marin and Gojou as they watch the anime series, I would have preferred to see more interaction between the two, and fewer scenes of the Flower Princess Blaze!! ‘anime’ I couldn’t care less about.

That being said, what has cemented this series into my head as one of my favorites of the season is that, instead of introducing the typical plot of another girl arriving on the scene to try to steal Gojou’s heart, instead the girl, Juju, just wants him for his dress-making talents.

That has saved us from the stereotypical jealousy and ‘love triangle’ that show up in romantic comedy anime too often, and instead allowed us to simply enjoy how Marin feels about Gojou.

Now I can’t wait until Gojou finally figures that out because, boy, will that be good.
