The upcoming Netflix film My Oni Girl (aka Suki demo Kirai na Amanojaku) has a second trailer out and, if you enjoy a coming-of-age anime about a relationship between two young people (sort of) struggling to overcome their own tragedies in life, then this gorgeous looking movie looks like a mandatory watch.
My Oni Girl tells the story of Tsumugi an oni, or demon, who has arrived in the human world looking for her mother.
Not long after, she meets Hiiragi, a first-year high school student who is so closed off he doesn’t make friends, and doesn’t express his feelings.
But, for some reason, he quickly finds himself becoming friends with Tsumugi — the most unlikely of allies, and someone whose personality is directly his opposite.
Kensho Ono (Tetsuya in Kuroko’s Basketball) and Miyu Tomita (Gabriel in Gabriel Drop-out) have been announced as the voice actors for Hiiragi and Tsumugi, which immediately explains Tsumugi’s fabulously husky voice, and the way Hiiragi sounds almost forlorn and lost.
New supporting cast members are Shintaro Asanuma, Tomoko Shiota, Aya Yamane, Shiro Saito, Mio Tanaka, Satsuki Yukino, Noriko Hidaka, Shozo Sasaki, Satoshi Mikami and Hisako Kyoda.
What is My Oni Girl?
My Oni Girl is the second in a three-part series of films from a collaboration between Japanese anime studio Colorido and Netflix.
The first in the series was another coming-of-age story, Drifting Home, which was co-written and directed by Hiroyasu Ishida (Penguin Highway).
In the case of My Oni Girl, director of A Whisker Away, Tomotaka Shibayama is directing the film.
Yuuko Kakihara (Koikimo) wrote the My Oni Girl script, with those beautiful character designs from Masafumi Yokota (The Seven Deadly Sins).
Along with the second My Oni Girl trailer released today via the anime film’s official website, we also got a stunning new poster that I wouldn’t mind owning actual poster size and framed.
Netflix describes the My Oni Girl plot like this:
Yearning to get along with others and not be disliked, first-year high school student Hiiragi finds himself unable to say no whenever someone requests something of him.
One summer day, while unsuccessfully carrying out yet another request, he encounters an oni girl named Tsumugi, who has come to the human world to search for her mother.
She does whatever she pleases and is the complete opposite of Hiiragi. Studio Colorido presents this fantasy tale of youth that unfolds over one wintery summer.
My Oni Girl will premiere on Netflix on Friday, May 24th.
Yeah, I’m blocking off my evening calendar that day.

It also features a snippet of the anime film’s theme song, ‘Truth in Lies‘ by Japanese rock band ZUTOMAYO (Chainsaw Man 2nd ending theme).
