Today in Anime History, October 9th, 2020: Adachi to Shimamura Premieres

On October 9th, 2020, the anime community welcomed a new addition to the Girls’ Love genre that would soon capture the hearts of many with its unique blend of introspective storytelling and subtle romance.

The Girls’ Love anime Adachi to Shimamura, also known as Adachi and Shimamura, premiered, bringing to the screen the delicate narrative of friendship and budding love between two high school girls.

Directorial vision and creative team

Directed by Satoshi Kuwabara (The Quintessential Quintuplets), Adachi to Shimamura stands out for its nuanced approach to character development.

Kuwabara, known for his work on series like How Not to Summon a Demon Lord and The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses, brought a sensitive touch to the adaptation of Hitoma Iruma and Nozomi Ousaka’s yuri light novels of the same name.

The series was produced by Tezuka Productions (Dororo and The Fable), which has a reputation for delivering visually pleasing animations with a strong emphasis on emotional depth.

The script was adapted by Keiichirō Ōchi (My Teen Romantic Comedy), who managed to retain the light novel’s introspective essence while making the story accessible to a broader audience.

The music, composed by Hanae Nakamura (My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!) also complemented the Girls’ Love anime’s contemplative mood with a blend of soft, melancholic tunes that perfectly underscored the characters’ emotional journeys.

The Adachi to Shimamura voice cast

The voice cast also played a pivotal role in bringing the wonderful characters to life.

Hougetsu Shimamura is voiced by Miku Itou (Megumi in Narenare -Cheer for You!-), who captured Shimamura’s air-headed nature with finesse.

Sakura Adachi, her introverted and sometimes quite cold friend and love interest, is portrayed by Akari Kitou (Futaba in Mission: Yozakura Family), whose performance added layers to Adachi’s sometimes jealous behavior, hinting at her deeper feelings.

Plot overview of Adachi to Shimamura

Adachi to Shimamura revolves around the evolving relationship between two high school girls, Shimamura and Adachi.

Adachi, often seen as indifferent, solitary and a bit of a delinquent, finds her routine disrupted by the outgoing but air-headed Shimamura, who seeks her company, intrigued by Adachi’s enigmatic personality.

The anime goes on to explore their friendship, delving into themes of identity, loneliness, and the fear of change. Especially as that friendship begins to change into romantic love.

Synopsis for Adachi to Shimamura, Episodes 1 and 12

Adachi to Shimamura, Episode 1, “Playing Ping-Pong in Our Uniforms introduces us to Sakura Adachi, a loner who prefers spending her class time on the second floor of the gymnasium, far away from the classmates she has distanced herself from.

Her quiet time is interrupted when Hougetsu Shimamura, a classmate, joins her without invitation.

Shimamura’s overtures of friendship, though initially met with mild annoyance, spark curiosity in Adachi about the nature of their connection.

It isn’t long, however, before the two girls are playing ping-pong together, and continue to do so in days to come.

Sure, they’re skipping class even more often, but isn’t this fun?

This first episode sets the tone for the series, focusing on both the differences in the two girls’ personalities, and the silent moments that speak volumes about the characters’ inner thoughts.

In Adachi to Shimamura, Episode 12, “Friends and Love, Love and Cherry Blossoms, the anime moves in the same slow pace as the relationship between Shimamura and Adachi has deepened, and as Adachi invites herself to Shimamura’s house for the weekend.

Shimamura proves that her love for Adachi won’t change, while Adachi herself struggles to let Shimamura know how she feels.
