The official website for the upcoming original anime Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night has released character visuals for protagonist Mahiru Kozuki (see below), along with a cute new character trailer that gives us an insight into the high schooler’s life and personality.
The Mahiru Kozuki character trailer, the first of four to be released, shows the young illustrator wandering the streets of Shibuya at night. Admiring street art, remembering how much her younger self used to love to draw, and trying to blend in as much as possible.
It’s then that she meets former idol Kano Yamanouchi, and her life as it was changes.
Mahiru Kozuki is voiced by Miku Itou (Grete in Spy Classroom), who is also introduced in the new video.
The anime’s website describes Mahiru’s personality like this:
Mahiru is a mass-produced high school girl with a quiet, reserved attitude. She tends to be overly sensitive, and while she is able to relate to people with all her heart, she is easily hurt by even the smallest things.
In her childhood, she was active as an illustrator named “KAIZUKI Yoru,” but was forced to suspend her activities due to a disturbing incident.
Because of this, she was traumatized by the idea of being special and spent her days trying to be as normal as possible. However, an encounter with Kano triggers her daily life to become special again.
Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night production staff
The original TV anime Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night is directed by Ryouhei Takeshita (Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun) with Yuuki Yaku (author of Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki) in charge of scripts and series composition.
Character designs are by Junichiro Taniguchi (Sing “Yesterday” For Me), who is also chief animation director.
Anime production is being carried out by studio Doga Kobo (Oshi no Ko).
The anime itself is set to premiere in Japan on April 6th, with HIDIVE licensing it for streaming in North America.
They describe the plot of the series like this:
Shibuya is a city full of identity. It is here on Shibuya’s late night streets that illustrator Mahiru Kozuki, former idol Kano Yamanouchi, Vtuber Kiui Watase and composer Mei Kim Anouk Takanashi — four young women who are slightly outside the world — join together and form an anonymous artist group called JELEE.
“I” also want to shine like someone else. If it’s not me but “we” then we might be able to shine.
Watch the new Mahiru Kozuki character trailer and then agree with me, this one looks freakin’ cute!
