Korean Drama Trivia #3

In a new series called Korean Actor Trivia, over the next few months, we will be answering all kinds of questions about our favorite Korean actors and actresses.

Today we are looking at My Demon actor Song Kang, and asking “What was Song Kang’s breakout role?”, and “How long was it after his debut he was awarded the role?”

Let’s get started then…

While South Korean actor Song Kang is one of 2023’s biggest celebrities due to starring in both Sweet Home, Season 2 and My Demon last year, things weren’t always like that for the now-30-year-old actor.

Just like almost every other actor, he had to pay his dues before both his breakout role arrived, and before he became a big deal in the acting world.

In fact, Song Kang’s breakout role actually comprised two different roles in two markedly different dramas, with the first one arriving four years after he made his acting debut.

Song Kang’s breakout roles

Those breakout roles for the then 25-year-old actor were the role of model Hwang Sun Oh in the hit Netflix rom-com series Love Alarm in 2019, followed by the role of protagonist Cha Hyun Soo in the first season of the Netflix horror series Sweet Home the following year.

Both dramas were enormous successes on Netflix, ending up being two of the most-watched of the year.

In other words, not only was Netflix kind enough to provide Song Kang with his breakout role, they did so twice.

Since then, of course, the Korean actor has gone on to only star in lead roles, with performances in K-dramas Navillera, Nevertheless, Forecasting Love and Weather, the aforementioned My Demon, and seasons 2 of both Love Alarm and Sweet Home, as well as back reprising his leading role in the upcoming Sweet Home 3.

With his superb acting talents and his astonishingly good looks, he should also be grabbing more main roles this year and next in even more dramas.

If it wasn’t for the pesky reality that Song Kang is now serving his mandatory service in the Korean military with no chance of returning to the acting world until at least November, 2025.

Boo.

Meanwhile, if you haven’t watched them yet, or even if you have, you can watch Song Kang’s breakout roles in both Love Alarm and Sweet Home on Netflix now.
