Conchita Wurst released the official audio for two new songs yesterday – ‘Somebody To Love‘ and ‘Up For Air‘. Both songs are from her upcoming debut album Conchita, releasing on May 15th. (Pre-order here).
But rather than push both of these songs into one article, as other writers seem to be doing, I’m going to look at them one by one. After all, she’s worked hard on these, they’re both beautiful, and they both deserve their own attention.
So, let’s start with ‘Somebody To Love’, as it’s the first of the two I heard yesterday and, a day later, it is still my favorite — by a hair’s breadth, no more.
Similar to ‘Heroes‘ in that it has the echoing almost-African backing vocals Conchita seems to love, ‘Somebody To Love’ is a relaxed quite sophisticated ballad musically, and with one of those swaying beats I adore. You know, the kind you can turn the lights down on, close your eyes and dance real slow.
Lyrically, it’s deceptively simple but with gems like this – “Read me like a story, Can you be my beautiful liar, In the pain there is glory, We’re in the line of fire”.
Emotionally, it’s sad, as her voice has this gorgeous feeling of longing to it as she sings about wanting to find someone to love, but being with someone who may just be someone to love…for now. “Too late for the party, But that don’t mean we can’t play”.
It ends in intensity and with several of her spectacular high notes which, let’s face it, a Conchita song wouldn’t be a Conchita song without.
And I love this one because it’s absolutely her. Always pretending everything is perfect and nothing and nobody can hurt her, when in reality she’s full of emotion and always hiding her real self away.
Conchita Wurst – Somebody To Love
Too late for the party
But that don’t mean we can’t play
Can you talk to me naughty
Can you love my heartache away
Tell me what you’re thinking of
Tell me what I need to know
It’s evident and I can’t pretend, no
I tell myself I’m living
But really I just long
For somebody to love
For somebody to love
Just give in to the feeling
That we could have it all
With somebody to love
Yeah somebody to love
Read me like a story
Can you be my beautiful liar
In the pain there is glory
We’re in the line of fire
You can have that part of me
Keep it under lock and key
It’s evident and I can’t pretend, no
I tell myself I’m living
But really I just long
For somebody to love
For somebody to love
Just give in to the feeling
That we could have it all
With somebody to love
Oh I just wanna love somebody
Oh I just wanna love somebody now
Oh I just wanna love somebody
Oh I just wanna love somebody now
We can turn into starlight
We can turn to gold
Making love till the morning
Like we’ll never get old
We can turn into starlight
We can turn to gold
Making love till the morning
Like we’ll never get old
I tell myself I’m living
But really I just long
For somebody to love
For somebody to love
Just give in to the feeling
That we could have it all
With somebody to love
Love somebody, love somebody
Oh I just wanna love somebody now
Oh I just wanna love somebody
Oh I just wanna love somebody now
Update:
Conchita gave her very first live performance of ‘Somebody To Love‘ at Vienna’s Euro Fan Cafe last night, May 17th, 2015. It was video taped by Sylvia, one of the lovely administrators of Conchita’s official fan club – Conchita’s Wurstgemeinde. You can watch it below. It’s wonderful.
