On The Simpsons this week, the Simpsons family finds themselves at a “destination wedding” in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Along with the usual social commentary disguised as animation silliness, The Simpsons also featured a couple of songs on its soundtrack.
Tracks that included Scottish indie pop band Belle and Sebastian’s ‘If You Find Yourself Caught In Love‘ – The Simpsons, Season 35, Episode 8, “AE Bonny Romance“.
That song played as the Simpsons participate in the haggis cooking class, the bachelor party… with strippers, and the rehearsal dinner.
Meanwhile, Lisa is out at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival soaking up Scottish culture.
Who is Belle and Sebastian, and where does the band name come from?
Despite often being praised by people in the music industry, the 7-member Scottish indie band is not particularly well known.
Nor do they sell a slew of records. Unfortunately.
Belle and Sebastian was founded in 1996, so they have been around for a long time.
During those 27 years, Belle and Sebastian has released 12 full-length studio albums, three compilation albums, four live albums, nine EPs and more than 20 singles — some of which have charted, while some have not.
The band name is taken from a popular 1960s French children’s series called Belle et Sébastien that was a big hit all over Europe, including the UK.
A series I used to be obsessed over as a child, as it featured an utterly beautiful boy and his gorgeous dog living in the French Alps.
As for Belle and Sebastian’s ‘If You Find Yourself Caught In Love’, the song is one of the band’s earlier songs, coming out on their sixth studio album Dear Catastrophe Waitress in late 2003.
It is the 10th track on the Mercury Music Prize nominated album, but was not one of the two singles released from it.
The song’s lyrics are somewhat religious, while they praise the beauty of falling in love. Something Willie has discovered, much to Bart’s annoyance:
If you find yourself caught in love
Say a prayer to the man above
You should thank him for every day you pass
Thank him for saving your sorry ass
Listen to Belle and Sebastian’s ‘If You Find Yourself Caught In Love’ as heard on The Simpsons in the video, and on the Scottish band’s Dear Catastrophe Waitress.
