Iconic singer songwriter Cher’s ‘Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves‘ was that superb song playing on Hacks last night as Deborah stares at the tree house in her neighbors’ yard, then gets a chainsaw and starts cutting it down — Hacks, Season 2, Episode 7, “On The Market“.
The song was released in 1971 on Cher’s self-titled seventh studio album, which came out via the MCA and Kapp record labels.
The lyrics of the song were written about a young gypsy girl who falls in love with a man the ‘traveling show’ her family traveled with picked up.
But, after getting pregnant, the man disappears and the girl is left to raise her child alone.
‘Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves‘ became Cher’s first #1 single in the United States, and was said to be instrumental in resurrecting her then-stalling career.
The track also earned Cher her first Grammy Award nomination.
The upbeat pop song with its downbeat lyrics also became a big hit for Cher outside the United States.
The track charted in 13 other countries with its highest placing at #1 in Canada.
