Listen to Devo’s ‘Whip It‘ from Stranger Things and watch the crazy music video
Season 2 of Stranger Things has finally been released on Netflix, and half the people I know are binge watching it.
For me, while I’m not likely to watch the second season as I just didn’t enjoy the first, I do love that, yet again, the music supervisors of the show have put together a superb play list of classic 1980s music for the series’ soundtrack.
Songs like post-punk band Devo’s ‘Whip It‘. The first track to appear on the first episode of season 2 of Stranger Things — “Madmax” — and a track that was a massive hit for the American band when it was released in August, 1980.
And while most critics seemed to think ‘Whip It’ was successful because people thought it was about masturbating, I beg to differ.
I think Devo’s ‘Whip It‘ did so well because the song is catchy, has a memorable synthesizer melody and cool lyrics. The band also released one of the most bizarre, artistically fabulous music video for the song. A video that was years ahead of its time.
‘Whip It‘ is from Devo’s third studio album Freedom of Choice, and is the only top 40 single the band ever produced.
Listen to the track below, and watch that wild music video. Now couldn’t that just have easily have been filmed and released today?
