Remember Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show’s ‘Sylvia’s Mother’, that absolutely amazing song from 1972 about a failed relationship that many of us could definitely identify with now? Well, it appeared on ‘Fargo‘ a couple of weeks ago (Season 2, Episode 9 — “The Castle“), and I’ve had it stuck in my head ever since.
‘Sylvia’s Mother’ was written for Dr. Hook by songwriter Shel Silverstein, and is based on the true story of a relationship he had that failed. At the time, he called the house of his former girlfriend only to be told by her mother, just like in the song, that the relationship was over and Sylvia had moved on.
Now it’s become a classic song that many of us remember as being one of the songs we loved when we were kids.
Listen to Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show’s ‘Sylvia’s Mother‘ in the video below. Forty three years after it was released, and it’s still the cool song it always was.
