Just about my favorite Fiona Apple song is ‘Every Single Night‘. An odd little song, and one with an even stranger music video.

So, when Fiona Apple’s ‘Every Single Night‘ was the last song on this week’s episode of The Handmaid’s Tale last night (The Handmaid’s Tale, Season 3, Episode 7, “Under His Eye“, you can guarantee that show just became even cooler in my eyes.

The track was heard right at the end of the episode as June attacks her walking partner Ofmatthew, and as the other maids form a circle of secrecy around them.

They eventually pull June off Ofmatthew, and we see June storm away furious. The song then continues playing over the end credits.

Fiona Apple’s ‘Every Single Night’ was the first and only single from her 2012 album The Idler Wheel.

It is a song about Apple’s struggle at night when she sleeps, and about all the weird things she dreams. It is also one of the most minimalist of Apple songs, with just her anguished vocals and the use of a marimba and a celesta.

The quirky and strange ‘Every Single Night’ music video features Fiona Apple wearing an octopus as a hat, carrying a brain in her purse, lines of thread pulling her out of bed, which she is sharing with a man wearing a minotaur mask, and herself dressed up like an iconic plastic Hawaiian hula doll.

Surreal and weird, but so perfectly and wonderfully Fiona Apple.
