Listen to Gary Lewis and the Playboys’ ‘Everybody Loves a Clown’ from The Winchesters, S1, E12

British pop and rock band Gary Lewis and the Playboys’ ‘Everybody Loves a Clown‘ showed up on the soundtrack of the dark fantasy drama The Winchesters on The CW last night — The Winchesters, Season 1, Episode 12, “The Tears of a Clown“.

The track was heard as John and Mary and the rest of the group are at the carnival looking for clues to the boy’s disappearance and see the clown.

Gary Lewis and the Playboys’ ‘Everybody Loves a Clown‘ came out in August, 1965 as the title track from their album of the same name, which was released on the Liberty label.

The single was a big success for the rock band, rising to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was one of several hits the band had that year and the year following.

The upbeat rock song has a catchy beat that makes you want to dance. Its fast-paced beat, though, belies the song’s sentiments — a guy asking the girl he likes why, no matter what he does, she doesn’t love him.

And no, the name of the band did not come about because the musicians backing Gary Lewis were popular with girls.

Instead, the lead vocalist named them ‘The Playboys’ as they were constantly late for band rehearsals.

The band itself broke up in 1970, with Lewis himself going on to forge a hugely successful solo career.

Listen to Gary Lewis and the Playboys’ ‘Everybody Loves a Clown‘ as heard on The Winchesters last night in the video, and on the band’s album of the same name.

The show is currently airing via The CW.
