The song was heard on the cassette Ellie gives Joel to play while they are driving.

Players of the video game the TV series is based on will also recognize the track, as it was also featured in the game in a similar scene.

Hank Williams’ ‘Alone and Foresaken‘ was recorded in 1948 from a radio station performance the county singer gave, but wasn’t released until seven years later in 1955, more than two years after the singer had died.

Unlike most of Williams’ other songs, which were most definitely country songs, ‘Alone and Foresaken‘ is a folk song.

The song has since been covered by artists like Neil Young and Dave Matthews, Chet Atkins, Neko Case and the American country blues band 16 Horsepower.

Listen to Hank Williams’ ‘Alone and Foresaken‘ as heard on last night’s The Last of Us in the video.
