The track was almost nastily played at the end of the episode, as Chuck is celebrating the Los Angeles win at the party and Prince is alone at home after suffering his embarrassing New York loss.
Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ ‘Empire State of Mind‘ is from Jay-Z’s eleventh studio album The Blueprint 3, which came out in late 2009 via the Roc Nation, Asylum, Def Jam and Atlantic record labels.
(Yep, there are a lot of record labels involved with Jay-Z).
The cool hip hop track itself is about New York — the ‘Empire State’ — which is why in the song’s official music video has Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performing the track in different places around New York.
At the time of release, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ ‘Empire State of Mind‘ was a massive hit for the pair.
The song made it high on the charts in over 20 countries.
In the United States, ‘Empire State of Mind‘ ended up at #1 on an astonishing six different charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart and the Billboard Rhythmic chart.
It also went on to be certified Platinum or Gold in 11 countries.
