British new wave band Johnny Hates Jazz’s ‘Shattered Dreams‘ was played on the new Netflix series The Sandman this week — The Sandman, Season 1, Episode 6, “Chapter 6: The Sound of Her Wings“.
‘Shattered Dreams‘ was the band’s first and, so far, only international hit.
The song was written by lead singer Clark Datchler and is the lead single from Johnny Hates Jazz’s debut studio album Turn Back the Clock, which came out in 1988 on the Virgin record label.
It hit the #5 spot on the UK Singles Chart, and #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in the U.S., as well as charted in 11 other countries.
As for Johnny Hates Jazz, the band was founded in 1985, and performed and recorded together until 1992 when they broke up.
In 2009, two of the three original members — Clark Datchler and guitarist, keyboardist and producer Mike Nocito — reunited to record a new album.
The band’s third member, Calvin Hayes, joined them briefly but then left again before recording began on the album.
Since then, Hayes and Nocito have released two new albums — Magnetized in 2013 and Wide Awake in 2020.
Listen to Johnny Hates Jazz’s ‘Shattered Dreams‘ as heard on The Sandman in the UK version of the band’s music video for the track, and on their Turn Back the Clock album.
