British indie rock post punk band Joy Division’s ‘Atmosphere‘ was one of three superb songs featured on the latest episode of Peaky Blinders‘ last night — Season 5, Episode 5, “The Shock” (Sunday, September 15th, 2019).
The track was heard during the funeral procession, and added its own atmosphere to the tragic scene.
‘Atmosphere‘ is not from one of the two Joy Division studio albums, however, but instead was originally a France-only limited edition single.
The song was released in the UK and elsewhere, however, just two months later after the band’s lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide. ‘She’s Lost Control‘ was the single’s B-side.
The single hit the number 1 spot on the UK Indie chart.
‘Atmosphere’ was re-released eight years later at the same time as the singles compilation album Substance. That is when the official music video for ‘Atmosphere‘ (watch below) was also produced.
Listen to Joy Division’s ‘Atmosphere‘ from Peaky Blinders, Season 5 in that video below. You can also hear Substance, which includes a 2010 remaster of ‘Atmosphere‘, in its entirety in the Spotify widget below that.
Other superb songs from Peaky Blinders, Season 5, Episode 5, “The Shock’ also include Radiohead’s ‘Climbing Up The Walls‘.
