Listen to Lit’s ‘My Own Worst Enemy’ from Cruel Summer, S2 E1 as Megan and Debbie are in the trailer

Lit’s ‘My Own Worst Enemy’ a superb song to open second season of Cruel Summer

The Freeform teen drama Cruel Summer is back for a second season this week with the usual outstanding soundtrack it became known for during its first season.

Songs like indie American rock band Lit’s ‘My Own Worst Enemy‘, which was the track playing right at the opening of the first episode as Debbie and Megan are in the trailer, and Megan plays the song — Cruel Summer, Season 2, Episode 1, “Welcome to Chatham“.

Lit’s ‘My Own Worst Enemy‘ came out in June, 1999 as the first single from the band’s second album A Place in the Sun, but wasn’t particularly successful only charting at #17 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.

Weirdly, however, the song went on to become somewhat of A Little Train That Could as it continued to hit more charts throughout much of 1999.

My Own Worst Enemy’ continued its success throughout 1999

Eventually the track charted at #1 on the Alternative Airplay chart in the U.S., at #6 on the Mainstream Rock chart, at #31 on the Mainstream Top 40 and also hit #51 on the prestigious Billboard Hot 100.

By the end of the year, Lit’s ‘My Own Worst Enemy‘ had also charted in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Scotland.

The cool rock track then culminated its successful year by being nominated for, and winning, the award for Modern Rock Track of the Year at the Billboard Music Awards.

The song was also certified Platinum in the United States.

Listen to Lit’s ‘My Own Worst Enemy‘ as heard on the opening of the new season of Cruel Summer on the Spotify player, and in the song’s official music video.

You should be able to hear why it simply grew and grew and grew on those listening to it, eh?
