‘Torn’ plays on The Crown as Charles tries to bond with William over music on the radio
The Natalie Imbruglia song ‘Torn’ was one of the tracks played on the new and final season of the Netflix series The Crown this week — The Crown, Season 6, Episode 5, “Willsmania“.
It was heard on the episode as Prince Charles and William are in the car, and Charles is initially listening to classical music.
In an attempt to bond with William, who has been sulking since he got up, Charles changes the radio station and Natalie Imbruglia’s ‘Torn‘ begins to play instead.
Not that that makes William any happier or any more willing to talk.
When was Natalie Imbruglia’s ‘Torn‘ released?
While most people who know and love Imbruglia’s ‘Torn‘ may think it was an original release by the Australian pop singer, it actually wasn’t.
Instead, Natalie Imbruglia’s ‘Torn‘ was a cover version of a song that was released by Danish singer Lis Sørensen in the mid-1990s, then again by American rock band Ednaswap, as well as by a couple of other musicians.
Imbruglia’s cover version of ‘Torn‘, however, is the most well-known and most successful version of the indie pop track.
She recorded it as her debut single from her first studio album Left of the Middle, and released it via the RCA record label in November, 1997.
The song became a surprising and absolutely massive international hit, charting at #1 in seven countries, and at #1 in the United States on three charts including on the Adult Top 40 chart.
Imbruglia was also nominated for a Grammy Award for the song, but lost out to Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On‘ (well, it was a Titanic year, eh?)
Still, the huge success of Natalie Imbruglia’s version of ‘Torn‘ put the then-still-unknown indie pop singer onto the music world’s map worldwide.
A map she has stayed on with five more studio albums, an EP and a number of very successful single releases.
To this day, though, ‘Torn’ is still her most successful single and her most well-known song.
