Rupert Holmes’ ‘Escape (The Piña Colada Song)‘ was one of the tracks played on last night’s episode of Better Call Saul — Better Call Saul, Season 6, Episode 12, “Waterworks“.
The soft rock track was heard playing at the barbecue.
Rupert Holmes’ ‘Escape (The Piña Colada Song)’ was released in late 1979 on the British singer songwriter’s fifth studio album Partners in Crime, which came out via the Infinity Records label.
The song tells the story of a man who, tired of his current relationship, decides to answer a personal ad in which the woman wants to meet someone who likes drinking piña coladas.
But, when he gets to the bar where he is supposed to meet the woman, he discovers she is his current girlfriend.
It is then they both realize they have more in common than they thought, and that they should probably give this relationship another try.
Rupert Holmes’ ‘Escape (The Piña Colada Song)’ was a surprise hit in the United States, shooting up the charts and hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
It also hit #1 in Canada on two different charts, and charted in 7 countries including the United Kingdom, ultimately becoming something of a cult hit.
