The new Apple TV+ comedy The Big Door Prize has been featuring some superb music on each episode’s soundtrack, including American rock pop singer Sophie B. Hawkins’ ‘Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover‘.
That track showed up last night on The Big Door Prize, Season 1, Episode 4, “Father Reuben“.
The song was played on the episode as Mayor Izzy (Crystal R. Fox) is dancing at the wedding, and then as Father Reuben (Damon Gupton) and Hana (Ally Maki) are dancing together.
Sophie B. Hawkins’ ‘Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover‘ was the American singer’s debut single as well as the lead single from her debut studio album Tongues and Tails, which came out in 1992.
The track catapulted the then largely unknown singer to world recognition in just a few weeks, making it onto charts in 14 countries, becoming a hit in several European countries and also in the UK and the U.S.
In the United States, Sophie B. Hawkins’ ‘Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover‘ ranked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at #39 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
It was a track written from Hawkins’ perspective as she sees a woman in an abusive relationship, and wishes she was the woman’s partner instead.
Listen to Sophie B. Hawkins’ ‘Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover‘ as featured on the Apple TV series The Big Door Prize this week in the song’s music video, and on Hawkins’ Tongues and Tails album.
Thirty years after its release, and it is still Hawkins’ most listened to song.
