Dutch acoustic pop band The Black Atlantic‘s ‘I Shall Cross This River‘ was featured on the latest episode of ‘Shameless‘ this week (December 18th, 2016) — Season 7, Episode 12, “Requiem For a Slut“. It was heard playing during Monica’s funeral.

The track is from the band’s debut album Reverence For Trees, (listen to the whole album below), which has been available for free download since it was first released in 2009 (although, of course, you can choose to name your price and buy it to support the band as well).

And it was a perfect track for Monica’s funeral, as the song was written as a way to honor the dead. In this case, the three grandparents of lead singer Geert van der Velde, who all died during the year and a half the album was being recorded.

As for The Black Atlantic they are a Groningen, Netherlands-based band that put out their music on their own label, Beep! Beep! Back up the Truck. They are a band known for their melancholy sound.

Listen to The Black Atlantic’s ‘I Shall Cross This River‘ in the video below. It’s really quite beautiful and, yes, you can definitely hear that Bon Iver influence they love so much in it.
