Funk and soul band The Commodores’ ‘Nightshift‘ was the song playing on the NBC series Quantum Leap this week  — Quantum Leap, Season 1, Episode 15, “Ben Song for the Defense” — as Ben gets home after work to discover Vicky looking at some files.

She then offers him some Chinese food, and he (as Aleyda) asks her for a favor.

The Commodores‘ ‘Nightshift‘ was released by the band in 1985 as the title track of their 11th studio album of the same name, and as a single.

Interestingly, the band members didn’t want the song to be released as a single at the outset, which would have been a mistake, as it went on to become an enormous hit for the American soul band.

Nightshift‘ charted on 23 charts in 17 countries.

Its biggest success though was in the United States where the track hit #1 on the Hot Black Singles chart, #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Commodores’ ‘Nightshift‘ also went on to become the group’s biggest hit in their career, and eventually won them a Grammy Award in the category of Best Vocal R&B Performance by a Duo/Group.

Listen to The Commodores’ ‘Nightshift‘ as heard on Quantum Leap on the group’s 11th studio album, and in the group’s original music video for the track.

Almost 40 years after it first came out, and it is still a killer track.

Watch the first season of Quantum Leap on NBC.
