The Velvet Underground’s ‘Oh! Sweet Nuthin’‘ musically illustrates Sylvie’s collapsing time branch
While I am generally not a fan of superhero series or the Marvel Universe, I put those sentiments aside when it comes to the currently streaming Disney + series Loki as, man, that drama series is superb.
From its plot to its acting to its utterly insane special effects, Loki is a standout in the genre so, no, it is no surprise the sci-fi, superhero, action adventure drama is one of the most-watched series Disney + has ever streamed.
Add in the drama’s music supervisors choosing some truly phenomenal songs for the Loki soundtrack (both seasons), and I could well be persuaded to change my stance on the Marvel Universe if we keep getting brilliance like this.
Take today for instance, when the latest episode of Loki released and The Velvet Underground’s ‘Oh! Sweet Nuthin’‘ was chosen to be the track Sylvie listens to in the record shop as the time branch begins to collapse — Loki, Season 2, Episode 5, “Science/ Fiction“.
A song that talks about a group of people who are losers in life but, instead of the mournful future they seem to be destined to experience, the song is actually about the beauty of having nothing and being happy anyway.
When was The Velvet Underground’s ‘Oh! Sweet Nuthin’‘ released?
The beautifully optimistic song was one of the tracks on the band’s fourth studio album Loaded, which was released in November 1970.
An album that was the last one written by and featuring band founder Lou Reed, who had left the band right before it was released.
It is one of four songs on the album that feature bassist Doug Yale’s vocals, although both fans and Velvet Underground member Sterling Morrison have said since the tracks may have been better with lead singer Lou Reed’s usual vocals.
(Personally, I like Yale’s slightly rough vocals, as they add an even more mellow, laid-back feel to the song).
The Velvet Underground’s ‘Oh! Sweet Nuthin’‘ is a deceptively unadorned song, with its simple chords and simple melody, but one that is so sweet it can put you in the best kind of mood for just listening to it.
Hence its use in that crazy Loki scene, eh?
Listen to The Velvet Underground’s ‘Oh! Sweet Nuthin’‘ as heard on this week’s Loki in the video, and on the remastered version of their Loaded album.
The final episode of the current season of Loki will hit Disney+ next week.
